Two weekends ago I was invited to Edmonton by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada, Dr. Ihor Ostash, to help celebrate the 120th Anniversary of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada. Edmonton was the last stop on a cross-country train tour called the “Historic Train of Ukrainian Pioneers.” This was a special celebration for me because as many of you know, my family roots extend back to Ukraine and the Ukrainian culture is a big part of who I am.
With the celebrations th...

Last weekend when I was back in Saskatchewan for a family event and a friend’s wedding, I surprised my elementary school by showing up during their year-end awards assembly. Some of you may remember that I partnered with École Wilfrid Walker during the Olympic year through the Adopt an Athlete Program, and at the end of the year the school created the Makowsky Award to commemorate the partnership.
Every year, a gold medal is presented to a student from each grad...

Hey everyone,
Happy Canada Day!
In celebration of Canada’s birthday, I want to let everyone know that CAN Fund is launching their first athlete e-Book called "Excellence: The Ripple Effect". It includes 36 stories of Courage, Believing In Yourself, Success From Failure, Excellence and Representing Canada that are written by many of Canada’s top athletes, including myself.
All of us have experienced moments in our lives or...

Last weekend I spent a couple of great days back in Regina, so I figured in light of that I could get a few new pictures up on the site for all those who missed out. I had lots of fun at the Regina Speed Skating Club’s year-end banquet and got a little motivated to get back into training after seeing so many people out at the Regina Police Services ½ Marathon.
First up was the RSSC’s year-end banquet. Aside from chatting and hanging out with most of the ...

Ok, so I don’t know where the last two months have gone but it’s already mid-October and the season is well under way. I’ve had a bit of extra time off the ice for the last week and a half because of a foot infection, so with the extra time I wanted to fill everyone in on how things have been.
First thing’s first - the ‘foot infection’. Sometime last week I got cellulitis on my left foot, which according to Wikipedia is a diffuse inflamma...

Hey everyone,
Looking at a calendar, some time has definitely passed since I last updated my blog. I don’t think I’ve been home in Calgary for more than a few days at a time since coming back from Europe; so, the busy schedule hasn’t made it easy to keep everyone updated.
Having said that, I’ll be home a little more regularly now that I’ve started training again. In my blog I’m going to finish up my Olympic Recap and I...

While all of the excitement was building up for the Olympics, I was getting ready for my Olympic debut on day two of the Olympics. I couldn’t worry too much about the condo or Athlete’s Village, the Opening Ceremonies, or anything else going on in and around Vancouver; I had to get ready to race.
When I’m only getting ready for one race, as opposed to 2 or 3 in a weekend at a World Cup, the week leading up to that race is a lot more specific. I did longer...

After things were set up at my condo and my room at Athlete’s Village, the next big thing was to decide whether or not I was going to go to the opening ceremonies. Making that decision took a lot of time, and was probably one of the most drawn out decision I made during the Games.
The first time I actually thought about the opening ceremonies probably goes back at least a year. That’s when I really started to see myself as having a realistic shot at making the ...

While I’m looking back at my experiences at the Olympics, I’m going to keep it somewhat chronological – just to give it a little order. But if something comes to mind, I’m just going to go with it.
If I go back to the week before the Olympics started, I would have just been moving into the Athlete’s Village. I moved into my room on Friday the 5th (along with everyone else on the long track team who was going to stay at the village), where our ...

First of all, thanks for all of the support leading up to and during the Olympics! From the individual messages of encouragement to all of the guestbook signatures, they were all great to read both before and after my races. I couldn’t have done this without you!
Now that things have settled down a little, I’m going to go back and piece together everything that happened over the last few weeks. There was lots that went on that I didn’t get a chance to sha...
