At the Canadian Single Distances Championships/Olympic Trials, Lucas competed in the 5000m on 28 December and the 1500m on 1 January.

On the second day of the Canadian Single Distances Championships/Olympic Trials, Lucas skated the 5000m. Racing in the tenth and final pair against Jordan Belchos, he needed 6:24.57 to complete the distance. This was not only another personal best, but it also earned him the gold medal and a spot on the Olympic Team! Denny Morrison finished second in 6:25.40 and Mathieu Giroux completed the podium with his 6:25.74. Canada has two Olympic berths in the men’s 5000m, and the participating athletes will be announced officially in the next few weeks.

Lucas gave a great start to the new year today, when he finished first in the 1500m at the Canadian single Distances Championships/Olympic Trials, thereby securing an Olympic berth in this distance. Skating in the 18th and final pair with Mathieu Giroux, Lucas crossed the finish line after 1:44.47, while Giroux needed 1:45.34 to complete the distance, good for the silver medal. Kyle Parrott finished third in 1:45.69, and Denny Morrison was already prequalified for the 1500m.

With his victories in the 5000m and 1500m at the Olympic Trials, Lucas not only earned Olympic berths in these two distances, but also secured a spot on the Olympic Team Pursuit team.
