Canadian Single Distances Championships, 27 - 31 December 2009

This year the Canadian Single Distances Championships took place in Richmond, BC. These Canadian Championships were the first official competition at the Richmond Olympic Oval, that will be the venue of the Olympic Winter Games in 2010 and the World Single Distances Championships later this season. Lucas Makowsky competed in four distances: the 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10k.

Today the Canadian Single Distances Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval kicked off with the 500m, in which Lucas finished 20th (37.05). He only skated the first 500m.

 

In the first 500m the gold medal was for Jamie Gregg after he skated to a time of 35.42. Second was Denny Morrison in 35.60 and the bronze was for Muncef Ouardi (35.67). The second 500m of the day saw a different winner: Kyle Parrott took the gold after skating a 35.63, the silver medal was for Vincent Labrie (35.67) and Muncef Ouardi ended up on the third step of the podium for the second time today after racing to a 35.74.

 

These combined times resulted in the overall gold medal for Jamie Gregg (71.300), Kyle Parrott finished second (71.330) and the bronze medal was for Denny Morrison (71.370).

On the second day of the Canadian Single Distances Championships, Lucas finished first in the 5000m. He skated his 6:39.32 in the first pair, and after him no skater managed to beat this time. Denny Morrison finished second in 6:43.37, the bronze medal was for Steven Elm (6:44.78).

On the fourth day of the Canadian Single Distances Championships, Lucas once again stepped on the podium, this time for a silver medal in the 1500m. He finished 1.25 seconds behind Denny Morrison, the world champion and world record holder in this distance. Lucas needed 1:48.70 to complete his 1500m, where Denny Morrison finished in 1:47.45. Steven Elm won the bronze in a time of 1:49.63.

On the last day of the Canadian Single Distances Championships in Richmond, there was another gold medal for Lucas. In the 10k he raced to 13:54.33. Jordan Belchos finished second (14:03.23) and the bronze medal was for Mathieu Giroux (14:03.74), a former short track speed skater who finished fifth in the 1500m as well as in the 5000m earlier this week.

Thanks to the combined results of his 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10k in Richmond, Lucas also won the overall all-round title.
