Friday, 7 November 2008

On the first day of the first World Cup of the season, Lucas competed in the  5000m. Starting in the 9th pair he had to race Hiroki Hirako. Hirako finished in a time of 6:29.98. Lucas finished behind him in a time of 6:32.28, good for a 14th place.

"This 5000m was a good start for me. I started a little more conservative and gradually progressed throughout the race, which seemed to pay off. When you’re able to build throughout a race like that, it’s a great feeling."

Today’s 5000m was won by Sven Kramer in a time of 6:15.74.

"Today, I didn’t race my 1500m technically the best, but after watching some video material and going through the race with Marcel, I know what I have to change for Heerenveen."

Sven Kramer added another gold medal after yesterday's gold in the 5000m. He needed 1:45.69 to complete his 1500m.

On the third day of the World Cup in Berlin, Lucas stepped on the podium when Canada managed to win the gold in the Team Pursuit. Together with teammates Jay Morrison and Steven Elm, Lucas started in the 6th pair against Germany and raced to the winning time of 3:47.29.

"The gold medal in the Team Pursuit was a bit of a surprise to me mostly because I really didn’t know what to expect going into it. Originally Denny was supposed to skate but he wasn’t feeling too good after his 1000m so Jay stepped in. I knew that Jay, Steve and I could skate really well together, but it really wasn’t until we looked at the race afterwards that I realized how well we skated. We didn’t start too hard and were able to bring it down at the end. I think that benefited us quite a bit on that ice surface. When we say that we finished first, we were pretty happy. That was the first time for me on the podium in the A division, so that made it extra special."

Germany came in second in a time of 3:47.37 and Japan won the bronze in a time of 3:48.02.
