After his silver medal and new personal best in the 1500m at the World Cup in Hamar two weeks ago, Lucas gave a good start to the World Cup in Calgary by skating to another personal best in the same distance: 1:44.09. Skating in the 8th pair against Ivan Skobrev he was 1.31 faster than his Hamar time (1:45.40), which was good for a 10th place. Chad Hedrick finished first in 1:42.14, and Shani Davis and fellow Canadian Denny Morrison completed the North American podium.
"One thing you can never complain with is progress. That’s what today was. But as good as it was to skate a big personal best, it was the confidence I gained skating the corners that I was happiest with. I wasn’t just scrambling to hold on at higher speeds - I was still able to build speed throughout. It was a solid race."
