Silver medal in new personal best time!
On the first day of the World Cup in Hamar Lucas not only skated his fastest 1500m ever, but with this time he also managed to claim the silver medal in this distance! Skating in the 7th pair against Remco Olde Heuvel, Lucas needed 1:45.40 to complete his race, which was a great improvement of his old personal best (1:45.63). The only skater faster was 1500m gold-medalist in Berlin and Heerenveen, Shani Davis (1:44.27). Today's silver medal represents Lucas' first individual World Cup medal.
"What a race! Not only did I skate a personal best here in Hamar, but I stepped onto the podium for the first time in my skating career. I’ve looked up to the top guys like Shani and Håvard for years now, so to share the podium with them today was something else! As for the race itself, I felt similar to how last weekend’s 1500m in Heerenveen went, just faster. I was paired with Remco again; so, if I had any chance at avoiding a cross-over problem on the back stretch, I knew I had to get it going on the opener and attack the first lap. That was my plan and I executed it exactly how I wanted to. From the moment the gun went off, I was 100% focused on the race – I was in the moment."

After his silver medal in the 1500m yesterday, Lucas finished 10th in today’s 10k at the World Cup in Hamar. He was paired with Marco Weber in the second pair and crossed the finish line after 13:34.48. Sven Kramer finished first in a new track record time of 12:50.96.
"The 10k today was tough, but I was expecting it to be. I started on a pretty comfortable pace and maintained it for quite a few laps. With a 25 lap race, though, a lot can happen. I really had to start working with about 12 laps to go and just tried to maintain what I could. The fight was there, but the last 8 laps were a tough push."
