World Cup Heerenveen, 14 - 16 November 2008
For the second World Cup this season, the athletes travelled to Heerenveen. Lucas Makowsky competed in three distances: the 1500m, the 5000m and the Team Pursuit.

On the first day of the World Cup in Heerenveen, Lucas was paired with Daniel Frieberg in the 1500m, and finished 14th in 1:48.33. Shani Davis finished first in 1:45.23.
“I ran into a crossover problem in today’s 1500m. I had to ease up coming out of the first corner on the first lap so I lost quite a bit of speed. Despite that, I raced it a lot better than I did in Berlin and finished the race strong.”

In today’s 5000m at the World Cup in Heerenveen Lucas raced to a time of 6:32.51, which was good for a 14th place. His pair Trevor Marsicano finished 9th in 6:28.49 and the gold medal was for Sven Kramer (6:14.32).
"I approaced today's race a little differently compared to last week. I started a little harder to really test my potential, but my lower back started to cramp up early on in the race and I wasn't as relaxed as I should have been. I was working too hard for the speed I was getting and that made for a tough race. In fact, this 5000m is probably the biggest disappointment of the season so far for me. With my lower back cramping up and me not being relaxed early on in the race, it made for a long race and i didn't leave the ice that satisfied."

On the third day of the World Cup in Heerenveen, Lucas finished fourth in the Team Pursuit. Together with Denny Morrison and Steven Elm he raced to a time of 3:47.52. The gold medal was for the Dutch team (3:42.29).
