Another personal best! On the first day of the World Cup in Salt Lake City, Lucas brought down his one-week-old personal best time in the 1500m from 1:44.09 to 1:43.53, which resulted in an 8th place. Like last week he was paired with Ivan Skobrev. First was Shani Davis, who crushed his own world record and brought it down to a stunning 1:41.04.

“I’m pretty excited with how I’ve progressed so far this season in the 1500m. I no longer have any hesitations in the corners, and I know I can get my speed early and maintain it till the end. Today’s race was really good. I opened a little slower and a little more reserved than last weekend, but my first lap was faster and I was a lot more focused on the last lap. Getting nipped at the line last weekend was a big motivator to have a strong last lap this weekend, and although Ivan got me at the line again by the same 0.04 seconds, I was very happy with how I raced.
On another note, Shani’s world record 1500m today was something to watch. His first 1000 meters were faster than most 1000m skaters could ever dream of skating, yet he did it in his 1500m. Truly impressive!”

In today’s 5000m at the World Cup in Salt Lake City, Lucas raced in the fifth pair against Johan Röjler. He seemed to be skating towards a fast time, but unfortunately fell with two laps to go and consequently finished 20th in a time of 6:29.18.

“As disappointing as the fall was, everything up to that point in the race reassured me that my engine is there for the 5k. The only thing I had riding on this race was to make sure I qualified a country spot for Canada for the Olympics, but, since I had enough to stay in the top 16 in overall points, that wasn’t an issue. When the most important race comes this season, I know I will have a good one!”
